This spring/ summer the humming birds have been out in force! Took these this morning on the back deck.

Wow, great photos!

Outstanding photos! What speed were you shooting at?

Amazing. The second one is a real stunner!

Excellent.
This morning I picked up an exhausted one off our deck. Wasn't sure it was OK, but it did fly away.
We have 3 feeders.

If I flapped my arms that fast I'd be exhausted too!

You in the southwest are lucky. You have several species - we only have one - the Ruby Throat. Once in a blue moon, we do get a Rufous Hummer. One of yours looks like a Costa's - I've seen them in Palm Springs.

Ours (mostly Annas) are very territorial and won't allow any other non-relative to a given feeder.

They're all territorial. Life and death for them. Immediate dogfight if 2 show up at the same time. Although we have 2 feeders, they still guard the whole area. Their metabolism is incredible. All of ours are females. Only one male ever showed up, did a diving display and disappeared. That was last year.

We have one very bright reddish male that only appears every now and then and is very aggressive! He comes in, runs off the others and then retreats. Still trying to get a picture of him!

And yet... I've seen videos with 5+ at a given feeder (or water thing)!

I finally got a picture of the reddish male who has been very aggressive at running the others away from one of the feeders. He acts like it is HIS feeder and no one else can use it! This isn't a great picture partly because it was late in the day and very over cast so the light wasn't good. As a result, in order to use decent shutter speed, I had to crank up the ISO to 5000.

By the way, the reddish hummer above is a male Rufous. Know for being "feisty".
