How to use the horn?

Quite a stupid question but how do I use the horn on my 1964 MGB? I can't find anything to make it sound /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You know you are opening yourself to a lot of funny answers here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Anyhow - it could be many things. Horn button contacts don't work. Horn itself does not work. You should be able to check if the horn works by just touching a hot wire to the correct side for a second thus eliminating that as part of the problem. Not sure though how that works with positive ground. Also ground on horn could be bad. I don't think the horn has a relay but if so that could be bad. Best to start at the horn and work back eliminating areas. Also could be a bad wire.

Does you horn have a single terminal or double terminals.

Looking over your message again. Did someone change the steering wheel and not put a horn button back? I am sure MGB's had a center horn button.

Actually the problem is even worse /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I know one is electronically connected in front of my engine (how do you call that in English? Under the metal plate above the engine..) but I have no clue where to look for the button to make it sound. On modern cars it's on the steering wheel...

Did someone change the steering wheel? I have a car which has a horn button the the dash but I had a 1965 MGB and I am sure the horn button was on the steering wheel (I think ).

If someone put a wood wheel or some other aftermarket wheel it is possible they could not hook up the horn button.

Hmm it is a wooden MG steeringwheel but I am not sure if it is the original 1964 one. Strange thing is the engine has been revised and the horn (one of the two) seems to be connected. But I'll have another search next weekend then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Originals were never wood. It is an aftermarket. Is there a center button? You said it is an MG wheel so I assume there is an MG button in the center which is probably the original button/logo. Does it push, move or otherwise?

One other possibilty is a fuse might be blown.

You said you have two horns. Look at both. Does one have two electric terminals and the other just one? The horn with two should have a wire going to it and then it jumps (using the other terminal) to the 2nd horn. It is possible the wires are not correct or to the wrong place or missing a wire. This is a common horn wire set up but not sure, being English, how a 1964 MGB would be. I assume the horns are simply grounded by being bolted to the chassis or body. Make sure grounds are good. Unscrew bolts and clean contact to body. If the car is still positive ground then touching a wire to the horn terminal from the negative side of the battery should make a sound. Just brush it quickly against the terminal. That at least proves the horns are OK.

Like Bruce said, there were no original wooden steering wheels so it's been replaced at one time. The original horn-button was in the center of the hub on the early cars. Sounds like either the horns don't work, the button doesn't work, or there's a break in the wiring somewhere. You might also check the fuses.

Hey I know just what you mean.
My 1969 with a stock steering wheel and no horn button.
Well on my car the horn switch is on the left hand turn signal switch. Push it in towards the column. If the horns work (mine didn't) they will sound.

Good luck

Thanks that is a good suggestion I am going to try /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually the horn switch is indeed on the left hand turn signal switch! It does however not seem to work unfortunately. I tried to see if there would be any power at the horn but there seems to be none.

https://www.mgcars.org.uk/electrical/horn.html will probably help me out with this. Maybe it can help you as well.

Good luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
