How To Stop Microsofts Downloading Unwanted Updates

I have windows 8 in one of my computers, Microsoft keeps pushing to download and update to 8.1. The only way I can temporarily stop it is to shut down the computer and reboot it. Is there a way to stop this invasion without dumping W-8? No I don't want W-10 or anything to do with it. Does Internet Explorer have anything to do with this? PJ

I doubt that Microsoft is tryin to download WINDOWS 10 without your asking for a copy.
something else going on there.

Re: How To Stop Microsofts Downloading Unwanted Updates

No PJ there is nothing you can do. With the introduction of Windows eight updates became mandatory, gone are the days of choosing to not update every fifteen minutes.

I have Windows 8. Eventually updated to 8.1. Did not like at first, had to get used to it. Now works fine for office and webs.

Nice Mickey.

In all seriousness (for a change!), I've been using Windows 10 since it came out, and it seems to be working well - no issues. A bit of a learning curve at the outset, but even that wasn't that bad. Pretty seamless transition and the updates don't seem to bog the computer down as they did before. So far I like it fine.

A close answer.... but I would suggest looking into Linux. The less "intense" flavor is Fedora 22 (great workstation OS). Get it and ~Press on Regardless~!!

Fedora, Firefox, AVG or CLAMAV and a bit of *personal responsibility* will give you a short reprieve from the MS entrapment. But MS is seriously looking into putting out an "L-word" kernel they will control. Server side strong.

Be aware.

i had Vista on my laptop. Updates every 3-4 days and each time the computer would freeze for about 10 minutes before resuming. Laptop finally died last Thursday and I bought a new Dell for $449 with Windows 10. So far so good. I still have XP on my office computer but it's less trouble than the Vista. Updates stopped years ago.

Doc, I'd like to try Fedora 22, but there are so many versions, including different desktops. How about a recommendation for a starter. I like Mint, but always wanted to try Fedora, just never got around to it. PJ

Re: How To Stop Microsofts Downloading Unwanted Updates

Paul, I believe Mint uses the Cinnamon desktop, which you can get for Fedora, but not directly. You'd want the workstation version maybe with the Mate desktop. Once installed, you can download Cinnamon from the repository, install and use as your default desktop.

Re: How To Stop Microsofts Downloading Unwanted Updates

Ah, Thanks Greg, I'll download the workstation and try it out. Can I download it to a disk to install later? PJ

Re: How To Stop Microsofts Downloading Unwanted Updates

Yeah, with Fedora you download a.32 or 64 bit ISO file. Do a direct burn to DVD and you will have a bootable disc. You can boot to the OS without installing it on your hard drive. When you decide to install, there is an install icon on the desktop that you double click.
