I just did a clutch job and now the reverse lights don't work. The switch on the gearbox shows no continuity when both in neutral or reverse with the key turned to "ON."

I've ordered a replacement switch, but how does the old one come out? The fitting looks quite large; do I get a wrench in there, or are there some kind of screws where I can't see?

How hard is it to replace the switch from under the car? One site recommended dropping the cross member, which I'm reticent to do, as I don't want to stress the engine mounts.
 
Fairly easy and you might not need to jack up the car. If your flexable enough you should be able to reach up find the switch give it a twist and it may come right out or if your replacing the switch you can use a pair of pliers or channel locks to gain some leverage.
 
I don't consider myself having Herculean proportions, but, in my mind's eye, I can't fit so much as a forearm underneath an MG that isn't jacked up.

However, I'll give that a try!
 
Well, I screwed it up. I tried to wrench it loose and ended up breaking the switch. It seemed like it was starting to turn normally, then wrenched apart, leaving the aluminum stem of the old, grotty switch in the transmission. It's really shocking I f***ed it up so bad.

The new switch seemed so solid too, so I imagined the old one couldn't be nearly so brittle.
