the sleeve that fits over the gearbox input shaft is in pretty good shape and i'd like to use it when the new clutch kit arrives.

can anyone recommend the best way to pop off the old t/o bearing and fit the new one? i read in the archives that there's a special tool which will correctly turn the bearing as it is being fitted to the sleeve. however, i cannot find this tool listed at the big three.

will a threaded rod and some washers work?

I believe the TRF P/N is RFT121, but you'd best check with them.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]will a threaded rod and some washers work?[/QUOTE]That's all it is, except the nut is welded to the washer. You should be able to turn it by hand as you tighten the nut.
 
awesome, thanks Randall.. i think i just saw the actual tool on buckeye triumph site. i'll go with my own threaded rod + washers.

to get the bearing off, i will probably just put the sleeve in a the vise (padded with wood) and pry the thing off

I just installed the throw-out bearing on my new sleeve. I made the tool shown in the Buckeye's "Release Bearing Woes" article. It worked perfectly and rotated the bearing as it was pressed on.

Purely my opinion, but I don't feel such measures are necessary with the brass carrier. It's just not that hard to press on. I suspect the real problem is that the aftermarket steel carriers are not being made to correct dimensions and are thus much more difficult to press into the bearing than they should be. After all, all it has to do is not fall apart, it's not like there is any force whatsoever in service, trying to pull the bearing off.

Any, I just mash mine on in the vise, and I've never had a premature failure. But since I also don't belong to the "replace everything every time" crowd, that hasn't been too many times over the last 30+ years.

Of course better safe than sorry, so no criticism implied, just my 2 pence worth.

cool pictures Martin, thanks! don't have the means to weld the nut to the washer at this time, but i think i can still make do with a similar set up. -Steve
