How to install the Grill Surround - incorrectly

There are two ways to install the grill lip and grill surround pieces on a Mark II, BJ-7 and BJ-8. A right way and a wrong…

So what is the correct installation of the grill lip and grill surround on a BJ-7 and BJ-8? Does the upper lip install first followed by the surround with the surround’s upper portion covering the front part of the lip? This installation in effect creates a small bead that runs the length of the upper lip, looks clean and correct and all one piece.

The other way is to install the surround followed by the upper lip and completely cover the upper portion of the surround. The final installation looks odd and it’s very evident that the surround is two pieces.

And to think that I proudly displayed my car this way for years! I’m so embarrassed. Now I’ll hide in shame. GONZO.

Keoke- Thanks for the confirmation. The grill is now correct and I now can drive with pride again. Here's a pic a Little Bruiser and the Brute.

Hi TH:

The formulation was a success! Eternal youth!

No, seriously the only experimentation done here was to successfully post a pic. The little bruiser in the pic is my Nephew, Jacob, taken in Santa Barbara about two years ago when he was 5 years old and just minutes after arriving for a quick weekend visit with the family.

Sorry I missed seeing you at Dixon and Open Roads Tahoe…couldn’t manage the time. However, I do have plans to attend the Autumn Classics, San Juan Batista in October. GONZO /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sure hope you have re-hung the exhaust system. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I've got the same questions, and the photos are not available now. One additional problem I have is that I had both the lip and the surround replated. They look great, but I have a suspicion that the lip has warped a bit with all the buffing, etc. Does anyone have a good update or good pics on this process? While at it, are studs used on the top attachment points, or just at the bottom?

Hello Cutlass,

There should be 3 metal tabs on the top surround. One on each end and one in the middle. When you put the surround in place, they will line up with the holes in the shroud lip. The grill tabs will also line up. You'll use bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts to hold it in place.

The bottom of the surround (BJ8) will also have 3 tabs. The left and right will bolt into the angle plate that is riveted on the shroud. Those two end tabs will line up with the steady bracket and the air deflector assembly. The grill tab will also use that point for installation. Line up the grill surround, grill, air deflector and steady bracket. Use a bolt, washer, lock washer and nut. Some shimming may be needed, as these are old Healeys.

This is all from memory. Disclaimer here.

Photos of brackets, center bottom and left end.
Good luck,
Roger

Thanks Roger. I also found the following: www.ahcm.ca/newsletters/ahcmJun07.pdf

After some more fiddling last night, I found that one of my problems is fitting the corners of the upper grill surround piece to the larger, oval piece. They apparently just sort of fit together, with the corners of the upper piece fitting over the lower piece. Problem is that mine just don't seem to want to fit. There's also the problem of which of the multiple pieces goes on first, second, in front of or behind each other. The above article seems to help in that regard, but doesn't help with the corner fitting problem. I'll fiddle a bit more tonight. Jim

Hopefully you got from the article and the picture above that the eyebrow or upper piece goes undere or behind the oval piece. Versus how you describe the upper piece not fitting well over the lower piece.

My third night of fiddling has produced progress. Steven is right, the corners don't fit over the lower surround, but behind it. I'm getting closer. One problem is that the welded nuts on the lip are gone. I'll noodle that problem out.
