HOW TO change a ring gear with pics ; ]

first spend about an hour drilling through
the ring gear...i used a 1/4 inch bit, then
after i got a good start i moved to a slightly
larger bit.....drill all the way through the ring
gear but NOT into the flywheel.....

NEXT take a hammer and chisel or 2 hammers as in my case,
and split the ring in the drilled out spot...it will "snap"
right off when you get it right........
NOW insert your fly wheel into the freezer and put your new ring gear in the oven and turn it wwaaaayy up to 570+ degrees....mine only reads to 350 so i kinda guessed at it...now would be a good time to try out your fire extinquisher or prepare a snack for your soon to be preheated oven...; )be sure to put the geared edge down for easier movement later....cook about 30 minutes more or less...

when everything is ready...put on your leather gloves and
QUICKLY grab your flywheel, then with a pair of big pliers grab the ring from the oven....RUSH to your predetermined spot......lay the ring level onto the flywheel...

THEN try to hit both sides of the ring at the same time to get it to snap on....the QUICKLY go around it tapping to seat it good......it will be cool in no time....only took me 2 trys ; ) .. .....thx for reading........zzzimmmy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Right Arm Zimmy!!!

Congrats! The "time" threshold always had me worried, but usually if ya get it lined up well it'll go on easily.

Why 570 degrees? If you get it hotter than that will it mess up the ring gear? I like to put wrist pins in connecting rods that way. Then there is no risk messing up some new pistons. Instead of a freezer I used R22 refrigerant, but that was the good old days. Puts it at about 20 below zero in a hurry.

according to Chiltons 572-752 degrees F..........
392 degrees F for the 1500cc motor....
i have a 1275...........zzimmmy

Mine went on easy, I took it to a machine shop and had the surface ground at the same time. lol

The Austin Healey shop manual I have recommends 1600 to 1650 degrees! I happen to have an oven that can do that temperature. The starter ring comes out of the furnace cherry red and drops straight on a room temperature flywheel, no hammering required.
