How to build a Jaguar 1960

Film of factory production of 1960 sedans - interesting and highly manual process.

Basil - you don't need Facebook for this. Just click the link and you're redirected to the video. No login required.

Here's a non-Facebook version:

although I think the link was actually to this one:

JP - thanks for checking!

OSHA, we don't need to stinkin' OSHA (or whatever the UK equivalent is). Notice lots of cutting and grinding and metal shavings and no eye protection, presumably lots of noise too.

Of course men were made of sterner stuff in those days!

They were also deaf by the age of fifty and didn't always have all of their digits.

That is pretty loud. Listening to that dreck about communism hurts my ears worse than the factory din though. 🤣

Deafening for sure, but we don't know how many of those employees were wearing ear plugs. I think I did see one line worker with bandages on his hand tho' ...

Also, in the broad scheme of things, the "gather together and fight the corrupt system, comrades" spiel in the narrative is pretty interesting, considering the decline of British motor industry that was about to happen, due to "government assistance".

"We pretend to work; they pretend to pay us."

I think what happened to the British car industry in the 70s is pretty telling of what happens anytime the government gets too involved in the private sector.

Earplugs and eye protection was not in existent back then. Even military did not have protection in practice in the 70s. Until I worked in a shop in the 90s we only had gloves because the oils and grease were a cancer threat. Earplugs were for steel mills and aircraft jobs. Now, you have earplugs, glasses, gloves and masks. No wonder the tolerances have to be done by machine as the protection devices hinder sight, sound and smells.

The UK equivalent is the Ministry of Health and Safety.
