Well...The rest of the story ! !
Got the car up on the rack yesterday...and while we were a pint low on the fluid...the relay was shot. A new relay and
BINGO...back on the road with overdrive working beautifully!

FWIW, Gil, once my original relay gave up the ghost, I found that replacements (even the expensive reproductions of the original) didn't last long.
Then I added a diode across the solenoid, and even my cheap generic relay has lasted many years now. If you find your replacement flaking out again in just a few months, you might want to try the diode as well.
