The symptom: An otherwise perfectly running car will start and then dies immediately. Overflow tubes puking petrol on the garage floor.
Ok, let's start with the unlikely, check the distributor - Looks ok, but, the gap is awfully tight. So we'll just adjust that sucker and all will be well... Ok. That didn't fix the problem.
Ok, we'll check the fuel pump. Disconnect main fuel line and pump petrol into wife's mini-wok. Pump works fine - plenty of fuel. Clean wife's wok.
Disconnect float bowls. Aha! a float filled with at least 25% fuel. Aren't these supposed to be hollow? Go to mechanic and find replacement float. Put all back together and voila! Still have the problem.
Ok, take carb bell off and look inside. My God! it's filled with grungy gunk. Where did that come from? Ok, clean carb bell and soak the tiny fuel filters in turp too. Now she'll start. Button her up and.... Nope!
1 hour and 10 minutes. What next? Ummm, let's look at that float bowl again. Wait, the spring pin at the top of the float bowl cap is stuck in the up position. Wait, it's covered in gunk. Hmmm.... pull out wok disassemble and soak both release pins and washers. In fact, soak and scrub everything in sight. Put it all back together and SHE RUNS!!
Lesson learned: It's always something simple and the first thing you should look for is always the last...
