How much extra engine oil with oil cooler???

Time to change the oil in the 1275 Midget, so I'm wondering how much extra oil to put in to accommodate the Moss Oil Cooler. It's the 13 row cooler currently sold by Moss.

How much extra oil?

Thanks!

I would put in about half a quart and then check the oil level after running the engine for a couple of minutes.

Ok, you put in the oil cooler. Does it have a drain? How are you going to change you oil from now on and get rid of all if it at once if it doesn't have one? Essentially you will forever be mixing you new clean oil with old dirty stuff.

Thats what MGB guys have been doing for decades, it not alot of left over oil in the cooler, you could of course remove the oil cooler and drain them like we do on the race cars, but it is really not necessary for a street car.

Actually, Bill, the PO installed the oil cooler, I did not and wouldn't on this particular car (runs like a sewing machine).

I changed the oil, no extra oil was needed and the oil wasn't very dirty anyaway. Dipstick indicated "full" with the precribed amount of oil.

Oil had about 2,000 miles on it (Valvoline Racing), and was fairly clean. Maybe I need to drive her harder!

The PO also installed a Hayden thermostatically controlled fan and the usual performance goodies (cam; roller rockers; head work, etc.). Although it's impossible to know the effect the oil cooler has on this car it has never come close to overheating, even on 95 degree days in stop-and-go traffic. The fan does turn on on very hot days in slow traffic, temp gauge never goes above about 50% on the gauge.

Thanks for the input, guys! :yesnod:

The cooler won't drain so you need'nt add any extra oil. If the oil level was'nt low just note how much drains out! Is this a 1275 car or 1500 since I'm curious about how much extra engine cooling can be attributed to the oil cooler? Never heating up is worth alot.
Kurt.
