I was told that the bottom body plate was to be unpainted and mounted with brass screws. As you can see I did that. What about the top plate. How is it to be mounted?

Mine is mounted with screws like the lower plate, except that the screws and plate are painted body color.

The only reason I ask is at a LBC show a long time ago someone ask me why mine was screwed and not riveted. Just never been sure ever since. Now that I'm building the car as correctly as I can, I want it right. I know that both the top plate and screw/rivet should both be painted.

I agree - both of those are secured with screws, the commission plate (of course) uses rivets.

Note - photo is for amusement only, lower plate is a repro & the screws are simply my approximation of what would have been there originally.

This is a photo of my plates with screws. My TR3A came like this in May 1958 when I bought it new. The upper number late was painted body colour by Mulliners who made the bodies, semi-assembled it all and sprayed the whole thing. The brass plate was screwed on during final assembly.

The lower brass plate is a substitute and I had a new brass one made by Frank Angelini in Downingtown, PA with the correct numbers. But I have always had (and used) the original screws. On my TR3A, the screws were different for the two plates.

Ignore the text above as the photo would not be accepted.

After thinking about your question further I looked closely at the plates and while they are both held with sheet metal screws, the size and shape of the heads are different. The upper ones are larger and flatter. I'm pretty sure these plates and screws are original.

maybe I'm less positive about the lower screws in the pic I just sent, they are steel not brass and there's a mark on the plate that could have been made by a larger screw head.

Thanks Marco! Placed an order last night with TRF for other stuff and called them this morning before the order left the factory and they are on their way.
