We all know that the great Dolly Parton has passed… what a talent and human being. RIP’
I have a Dolly Parton story.
One night in 1973 I was trucking north out of Nashville headed back home to the UP of Michigan.
I was driving my shiny new Kenworth hustling to the house.
Somewhere in Tennessee I got passed by Porter Waggoner’s tour bus. Porter was behind the wheel of that Silver Eagle and making time in the left lane.
I gave him a shout on the old CB radio asking him where he was headed… the answer? Green Bay!
I told him if he could keep up I’d take him all the way to the front door of the Brown County Arena ( Hwy 41 ran thru the west side of town back then).
So we hit the throttle and headed north.
Many of you will remember that Dolly was part of Waggoner’s show back then. I asked him if Dolly was on board… yep she is.
He said once we get to the flatlands in Indiana she will slip behind the wheel and drive!
So north of Lou-a-vull the dome lights came on and there was Dolly behind the wheel.
Of course the CB came alive when those other drivers heard her voice and nosed into our conversation.
We had fun.
Finally we got to Green Bay… I wished Dolly and Porter a good night and I headed north to home.
I have met a few stars on the road over the years… Chubby Checker, Justin Tubb, Marshall Tucker Band, Hank Jr and others. Always pretty cool.
RIP Dolly…
