For any of you that have not seen "World's Fastest Indian" yet, that is an absolute must-see. Not really British car related, but a great true story about a guy who knew how to make a classic go fast!
It was at Bonneville, the car was a special streamliner and they did 254 MPH with an MGA Twin Cam engine (fastest Phil Hil ever went)
But wasn't the question what was the top speed of a car with original engine?
My TR-2 would do 110 MPH (no OD, RPM limited).
My TR-3 (modified) would do c. 120 - same problem.
My MGC has done 130 MPH, and my MGA race car has slightly bettered that.
The two problems are usually aerodynamics and gearing - many high speed cars are stable at speed (my Lamborghini is very good) but others , the Maserati Ghibli among them, are not. As for gears, most TRs won't top out 4th OD unless they have more power or a lower diff ratio - they just run out of steam.
"BMC hired outstanding drivers for the record attempt. Stirling Moss, one of Britain's best ever, was the main driver, with Phil Hill, who would be the only American to win the World's Driving Championship, acting as alternative.
Hill took the EX-181 out for a test run on Sunday, August 18th and although it was the car's first time at speed, he found everything to be satisfactory except for nasty gasoline fumes in the cabin. Moss arrived the following Tuesday for a planned run on Wednesday but rain washed out the attempt.
Thursday's weather was better, but problems delayed the run until 5:00 p.m. Although it was getting late in the day Moss insisted on going. It took a couple of tries due to the loss of third gear, but before the sun had set he was able to take the car through a measured mile at an astounding 338 km/h (245.11 mph). Although Moss was an experienced Grand Prix racer, it was the fastest he had ever driven a car."
You should watch the episode of Supercars Exposed on Speed when they went to the Texas mile. Tanner was trying to get to the 200 mph mark and he couldn't even do it in a Porsche Carrera GT or Ford GT, it took a heavily Ford GT with loads of HP to hit the 200 mph in just a mile.
No way you can do it in a TR6! I would be proud if you could hit 160.

Throw a turbo on a stock type TR6 and change the gears and I think you could reach 160, fairly easy. My car is no where near stock and has been 154 mph in the 1/4 already. Do I have the guts to give it a try, only time will tell.
