Spitfire How do you replace U Joint on late model Spitfire OD Prop/Drive shaft?

That's a CV joint not a U-joint. That's about all I can tell you about it.

That is a CV joint and not replaceable.....if the joint is bad you would need to buy or get the early splined shaft for your type trans and swap on the correct flanges...you would need a flange for the rear joint if going this route..

It seems to me that a "drive shaft shop" could repair it. Just lucky perhaps, I took my prop shaft to a company- the wiggled it a bit and said, " I know just what to do." About $80 later it works well- no slop or odd noises.

T.T.

I've had one of these apart recently.

You need to carefully pry the "can" like cover back a little at a time to get to the joint. It's crimped over a spring steel clip holding the rubber gaitor on, then another spiral circlip that needs to be removed to seperate the CV joint. This circlip fits in a groove on the inside of the flange end of the CV joint (aka the pot side of the CV joint). Push the shaft into this as far as it will go, and carefully pry the clip out with a screwdriver blade, pick, or similar.

Once removed, you can then pull the joint apart, but MARK THE ORIENTATION OF THE TWO HALVES FIRST. I cleaned up the roller balls and the cage and the female end of the joint; the old grease was solidified and gunky. I filled it with Swepco 101 grease (high molybdenumdisulfate grease, made for CV joints) and it's great now. Did I mention you need to mark the orientation first? It will reassemble in 6 different orientations; only ONE of which is correct. If you put it together out of phase, it will vibrate.

I used a flat blade screwdriver and pried UP all the way around the perimeter, a little tiny bit at a time. You need to bend the edge of the can upward, ever so slightly, until you can pull it back.
