MGB How do I tell if my '79 MGB has overdrive?

I realize that this is a really newbie (dumb) question, but the top of my gear-shift knob is missing (where the overdrive switch would be). I don't see any wiring inside that would presumably go to such a switch, so I don't think I have overdrive - but what other method is there for determining if one has overdrive, or not?

If it's a late model car, then you should have a slide-switch on top of the gearshift knob... if it's older, the switch may be on the dash, or on one of the column stalk switches.

Thanks for the quick reply, Kenny, but you might want to read more than the subject line before replying. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Don't know any more now than I did before! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif (And I think a '79 MGB qualifies as a late model.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Wow nice reply. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Asking questions and then getting nasty. I think Ken was only trying to help you. Not good. Not good at all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yeah, and somehow lastnight, I managed to delete the part where I said look under the car. If the transmission tapers to the driveshaft - it's a 4 speed. If it gets fatter at the driveshaft, it has overdrive.

Yeesh, don't be so snotty to Kenny. You may end up in his 'hands' one day and he'll have you looking like Mimi on Drew Carey for all your 'mourners.'

My '66 has the overdrive switch on the dash, to the left of the steering wheel. My '75 doesn't have OD yet, it's still sitting in the garage for a winter install.

Best way to tell is to belly under the car and take a look at the transmission - the OD lump will be obvious.

Jaybird, welcome. Been a bit.

Ya, you know me, introverted and unopinionated.

Heck Jack, with Binabox done, Emma running perfectly and being busy as heck, I don't have anything to post about.

Sigh, starting blasting and painting tomorrow. A long way to go yet. However, I think everything else is done and now have my hands on all the bits that are not available through the normal sources.

Going to be a long hot summer me thinks.
