How do I get the wheel off??!?

OK, something I took for granted.... knock the knock-off loose, spin it off, and the wheel slides right off. WRONG!!

At least on the rear wheels of my '66 Midget, which has the square fender openings. Long before the wheel slides off the hub, the tire hits the fender preventing further removal. Even deflating the wheel completely makes it seemingly impossible. I'm stumped and obviously a newb. Whats the solution here?

Glad I didn't learn this on the side of the road!!

Jack up the car, not the axle.
