How come they are so inefficient?

Dougie,

I wasn't making a blanket statement that 2 carbs are better than 3 (the Webers are really 6). I wasn't referring to race cars such as yours evidently is.

I was saying in the street race situation Greg was referring to, IMHO, it was a tossup between his custom tricarb setup and my 2x DMD setup.

As you say, torque is better than power. That's especially true in a Healey with it's limited rev range.

Which carbs & cam do you run?

randy, nice set ah pipes ya got there, spoke to kirk he said they dont make them anymore but after talking to him and reashuring him that id be able to "tweek" them if need be he agreed and hes making me up a set from his jig, i will however have to send them out to be powder coated if i want.

Steve,

I understand where you were going with that thought. My car is street legal, though I really just "shake it down" occasionally on the street after any repairs.
The neighbors love me. (Ya Right) As for my carb./ cam set-up, I ran only twin 2" SU HD8 this year and I have a custom reground nitrated BJ8 cam. I didn't have time to work all the bugs out of my period Ruddspeed tri-carb. manifold and 3 highly modified 2" HD8 SU's before the seasons first race this year. I will be spending some dyno time with about a dozen needles this winter to dial things in. I also have access to a tri-carb. 45 DCOE Weber system to test while on the dyno to measure the performance of both. I do like period look of the SU's. My car is prepared to FIA Group II regs. so I can use either carb. set-up and be legal in our SOVREN vintage grid.

Re: Headers for Healeys. What do the header users use to mate the headers to a (more-or-less) stock Healey exhaust? Since the exhaust is fixed-mounted (instead of hanging), do you use some flex tubing to allow for the engine vibrations? I would think bolting rigid downpipes to a pretty rigid exhaust system would cause problems eventually.

Randy,

In you pictures I noticed your rear end locating system, pretty slick!

What about triple 2" HD8's with a Derrington cam?

patrick67bj8, on the rebuild of my 63 bj7. i had the cam reground to bj8. spec. and nitrided didnt want anything to agressive, and i have located a couple of hd8"s. putting in headers was a recent development for me since i decided to not hurry/rush along all this summer with the rebuilt eng. and trans. install. and yes i do remember the "god awfull", should be a fun winter project since its my slow time of year. i guess imah gettin old. :savewave: holly cow pies, i just googled "paeco" and there still around, still have a great list of healey stuff, patrickbj8, now look what u done!

I'm glad somebody besides me still remembers Paeco and I hope you have a good budget. I wonder why they don't advertise?? Yeah, I checked out their website and they seem to have lots of stuff for Healeys. I wonder if anyone on the BCF has had any recent experience with them??

I talked with Nick Freeman of Nical(England), when he was here at Conclave and he suggested that I go to triple 2" intake manifold that he sells and a Derrington grind camshaft with headers instead of the "new" triple Rudspeed manifold that I own. He said the Derrinton grind was very good and starts coming on at 1200ish rpms and the idle is good and in his opinion is better than the BJ8 cam. He said he can take his Healey to 7k rpm but I think he probably has some other mods to be able to do that. I don't like the idle of a BJ8 camshaft and the idle is only worsened by the AC compressor that I have(rotary).

The clutch in my car came from Paeco.

The AP part numbers crossed over to the Ferrari 365GTB/4(!)

I had to use a 1 x 23 (spline) driven disc, because of the MGC xmsn.
