TR2/3/3A How can I bend TR4 air filters to keep them from hitting fender on TR3A?

I received the after TR4 market Wix 42307 air filters I ordered off eBay. As suspected they are quite deep and the front one hits the inner fender on my 1961 TR3A. Since I don't want to bend the fender to make the air filter fit, can any one suggest a way to successfully bend the air filter at the bottom without ruining the paper filter inside? The metal "grate" that encircles the filter and the paper are glued to both of the metal caps all the way around. The paper may be somewhat fragile since I suspect the filters are pretty old although they are not used filters. I have attached a link to the picture of the filters. Thanks!

In addition to the greater thickness -- the AC filters on a TR3A are offset rearward. The TR4 filters are centered on the carb.

How much do things need to move (noting that you will need to allow for engine movement during driving)? The usual aftermarket chrome metal filters were (as I recall) much skinnier than stock and a close fit even then.
