Just a quick update. My new server is all installed and the basic OS, MySQL, Php, etc is all installed. Next comes a bunch of adjustments to harden it against hackers before I transfer the BCF files to the new box. I have a LOT to learn about running this place on my own dedicated server, so please be patient if there are a few bumps along the way. I have hired a professional server management team to help with the initial set up and to make sure the server is as secure as humanly possible. Of course you can never make a server completely hack-proof, but there are a zillion things that can be done to make it harder for them. I am really pumped about this new set up and it represnets a quantum leap for BCF! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/computer.gif

YEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWW!!
Let us know if there's anything we can do to help, mon cap-eee-tan...

If not a quantum leap, certainly a leap of faith on your part, Bas. Once again, thanks for this great place!

Nice work boss. Running your own server is not that scary (we run all ours for the school district). A little researching, and you'll be good to go. If we can assist, let us know. Very exciting stuff!

Is your a Unix or Windows box? (Mine is Unix).

Man that is great news. Basils haveing fun now.

Lots of good ideas will come with this great upgrade.

"One giant leap for Basil, one small step for.."...er, is that how it went?

Excellent.

I'm sure you'll keep us all informed!

(Don't we always ask for pictures?)

Most of our servers here run Mac OS X (my favorite unix-like variant). Standard Apache/MySql/PHP setup. On the web server we use the provided Apache, but build our own PHP and MySQL. That box runs a dozen or so sites for all all our schools and internal web apps.

Our web server has been very reliable, but the traffic load isn't that huge. A good Unix box should do you well. I admit to having come to appreciate the power of the command line. We might eventually move the web stuff to a full Linux box, but it just keeps working so we've never bothered.

UPDATE - as I type this, the server management team I've hired on is going though an extensive list of security hardening procedures on the new box. A server can never be 100% hacker proof, but they have a huge list of things they do that will make it a heck of a lot easier for the hackers, and I can be notified automatically anytime there is any suspicious activity on the server.
