I remember when The Animals came out with their version. I did not realize it had such a history. The Animals version will always be my favorite.
I had always been under the impression the song was about a brothel ("And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one"). Interesting to hear a more complete, if somewhat confusing, history of the song. Thanks for posting.
