It is always best to remove all brass, bearings, etc. before hot tanking. Most material that is not cast metal will be irritated by hot tanking. It is also a good practice to remove as much as possible to allow the process to work.

To my knowledge, brass will not be harmed by the caustic solutions used in most hot tanks.
But----
The real problem is that in order to get all passages cleaned & thoroughly rinsed/neutralized afterward, all plugs should be removed. A bit of caustic left in the wrong place can cause a lot of problems later. It is for this reason that bushings such as old cam bearings should be removed first. There are passageways behind the bearings that are nearly impossible to properly flush afterward. It's not just to prevent eating the bearings.
It looks for the most part the only brass I have found have been a few pins in the top of the block that would be a pitb to remove. Rest of the engine is broken down so it's ready to go get cleaned up.
