Our frige has been running too long. Upon inspection, the evaporator was full of dog hair. I got to looking at how it cycled air. It pulls in from the front as well as behind it. It also exhausts hot air out behind it on the other side. Mine sits recessed in my cabnets. So, it's sucking in the hot air it just blew out. The factory carboard back has a few small vents holes to allow air in and out. I cut those out to a single 3X5" retangular hole in the intake and exhaust location. I put and a/c filter on the intake side that is spaced out about about an inch from the fridge. ( The filter medium sits to the outside of it's cardbord frame). This is taped securly to the back.
On the exhaust side a ran a piece of packing foam 3" square and five foot long from just behind the exhaust vent at the bottom up the back to almost the top. This touches the wall when I push the fridge back in.
This in effect creates a chimney for the hot exhaust to blow up and out the top and side of the frige. The intake side now draws air in down the slightly cool back of the fridge. I pushed the intake side flush against the cabnet to use the wood as extra insulation for that side. This leaves more room on the exhaust side to blow out. I tweaked the blades to draw in a bit more air. I also put used dryer sheets across the front intake grate to act as a filter.
It now should be more effient then when it was new. (hopefully)
