MGB Hot Lighting Harness 77 MGB

Had an odd problem when I got in my 77 B this morning at 6:00 AM. I started the car and turned on the lights. I started to back out of the driveway and when I did this the lights in the dash blinked and then dimmed. I then smelled hot wiring. I shut off the car and the lights and felt under the dash. The lighting harness was hot. The headlights are now on their own harness so I don't think it was anything to do with them. My wife did say that she noticed my license plate lights were not on. We had been carrying some items in the trunk so right now I'm thinking that I have knocked loose the wiring to these lights and they are shorting out in the trunk. Does this sound reasonable? I won't be able to check this out till this evening. Any thoughts or suggestions, please feel free to post.

Regards John

Sounds like a terfic place to start.

A good chance it is a loose connection somewhere. Get into the license plate lamp and look. Don't forget the ground. Good luck.

Hello KC,

sorry but a loose connection will give no or poor lights but not a hot harness, that requires an overcurrent so a short to earth is more than likely, wires chafing due to misplaced grommet, trapping between boot lid or as John mention carrying something that has caught the loom.
