Hot Drive Test--Results

Well, I advanced the timing up a bit, about one full turn of the knob. Put in premium fuel this time (duh!). And went for a drive in the heat. 107 miles full circuit, mostly in 85-95 degree ambient temp. Car ran mostly around 210-220 in the high heat. It gave no sign of boiling over, no vapors, smells, spewing, etc. Just ran great! Mostly mountain and freeway drive, but also stopped a dozen times times in hot parking lots. No overflow spilling noted on the asphalt.

Once, at the peak hour of afternoon heat, the temp gauge did reach 230 while going into a parking lot off the freeway. No adverse behavior.

At the end of the trip I refilled the gas tank and computed 20 mpg. Does this seem about right?

And, BTW, the cockpit insulation job I did earlier this year worked perfectly! No hot feet or drafts!

Just giving everyone an update.

Brian,

By my calculations your 20 MPG in US gallons equates to 20x12/14 Imperial Gallons or 17 miles per UK gallon which is about what I'm getting on relatively short runs here in the UK in my BJ8. I would expect my mpg to increase on longer runs but maybe that is just a hope <g>

At 83 pence per litre that's $6 per US gallon and you think your petrol (gas) is expensive !!!!

Hi Andrew,

I think you got your conversion the wrong way up!! UK gallons are bigger than US gallons. There are 16 fluid oz to a US pint and 20 fluid oz to a UK pint. In both cases of course there are the same number of pints to a gallon. Hence the US gallon is 4/5ths of a UK gallon. So 20mpg US is 20 x 5/4 = 25mpg UK. BTW 20mpg US is about what I get out of my BN2.

As a Brit living [for the moment] in Houston, I have at last found something that is not bigger in Texas!!

Mike
