i remember years ago when i bought an austin healey, the first thing i did was to remove the battery and dump a bucket of water mixed with soda into the rear compartment...usually resulted in a rather frothy mess of bubbles... rinse thoroughly with clean water and look for pin holes in the floor as well as in the gas tank...lots of folks did not pay much attention to the old lead-acid batteries and the potential for damage to the car.
@HealeyRick : I believe this is natural corrosion protection with positiv ground energy and acid rust converter..:highly_amused:
Without kidding , I expected nothing as a big hole and found raw material....
I know very well that it is normally a big patch area....for all vintage cars this is as well my experience that I agree with maxwedge5281
So and now I`m waiting for the world soccer cup today evening
i know this thread is a few months old but i am in the process of making some wiring changes to my 1958 bn6. the car has two almost new lead acid batteries properly located jusr ahead of the rear axle. there is some battery acid corrosion in the battery box area. Question...is there a closed non ventilated battery available that is small enough to fit in one of the battery boxes? a red top optima would be great!!! i would like to get rid of the lead acid ones??? thanks for any help or pointers!!
after doing a bit of measuring and talking to an optima battery distributor. it looks as if a a red top optima 25 might just fill the bill without any mods to either of the battery boxes. the battery length is just a bit over the box length dimension. but will clear rhe driveshaft and nose of the differential!
folded and welded up a battery box for the optima 25...took a couple of hours. the optima is just abrely long than the six volt battery and much shorter. seems to be a good fit and probabaly saved 20 pounds over the combined weight of the two six volt lead acid batteries.
cranked the bn6 this afternoon... the negative ground system might not be better but the car seems much smooter and much easier to accelerate.. my butt dyno has a lot of problems with so little horsepower but i swear the car seems much more responsive.. love the conversion!!!
