Horns

In the past I got some good advice from you guys about fixing an inoperable horn. It involved turning an adjustment screw. I'm just getting around to taking care of this. Question: Can I do this without removing the horns -- and where is the screw? Thanks.

Herb,

If your horns are original they should be Lucas # 1748. It would be best to remove them & do the work on the bench.

See if this helps:

The adjusting screw is the slotted head screw located just to the left of the wire terminal, rear view. It should be adjusted for sound, but not to exceed four amps current draw. A partial turn either way should be enough. You may have to go inside as above & clean the contacts.

Thanks. Your advice is always appreciated. I'll let you know how it goes.

If you are removing the horns from the car, anyway, they come apart fairly readily by removing some screws from the perimeter of the horn. You may find - like I did - that the metal vibrator inside the horn is frozen. I pried it loose, sanded it down and coated it with WD-40, then put the horn back together and all worked fine afterwards. There's no tricky stuff in there - just some electromagnets and the vibrating metal disk. So, don't hesitate to open them up if you need to do so. I think the screw adjustment you're referring to is on the back of the horn and can be accessed from the outside. Its installation under the car makes it difficult to reach so that removal is almost as easy. AL Bradley
