Horn Quadrant Removal

Hi,
I need to replace an oil seal on the steering box of my BJ7. My shop manual is telling me that the first thing I need to do is remove the horn quadrant(adjustable column). I have removed the three 'grub' screws, and the steering wheel will slide forward, but when I pull on the horn it is not coming out. It wiggles around, but it seems to be attached somewhere else. I have an after market moto-lita steering wheel which according to my Moss Motors catalog requires an adapter hub, and I wonder if that is what is hanging me up. Any ideas would be very apperciated.

HI Steve, Not sure, but what may be hanging you up is the harness that runs down inside the steering column. It must be aligned with the hole in the tube at the bottom of the column and it must also be disconnected from the main harness just under the hood latch retainer plate.This should allow the horn quadrant and its harness to be with drawn from the column. Note: you may have to tightly tape up the connectors on the end of the quadrant's harness to get it to pass through the tube--Fwiw--Keoke

Tightly tape the wires together AND be sure to tape in a piece of wire(I used "safety wire", but bailing wire will probably work too) within the taped bundle so that you can do a reverse when you go back to reinstall. Be sure the wire ends are staggered and not a big clump so that they are the smallest diameter possible for the shaft. Wire lube grease will help too. The wire you taped in should be long enough so that when you pull out your wire harness you do not pull the safety wire through with it. Pretty much like running electrical wire through conduit.

I only have a minor suggestion to add.
Check to see if the bullet connectors are soldered on and the wire is not only folded. If not soldered, remove the bullets and tape as described. When reinstalling, solder the connectors and insert into the receiver after filling with dielectric grease as this is a perfect time to do this task.

Thanks for the suggestions. It turns out that I have non-adjustable steering. But with the plastic clamping nut, and as it turns out a two piece stator tube that seems to have been jammed together. I think I will open another topic to get some ideas on how to straighten that one out. Not the first time the previous owner has tricked me.
