TR2/3/3A Horn Control replacement

Putting in a new horn control unit. When I pulled the stator tube out of the steering column I found the control unit was welded to the stator tube. Is that the way it is suppose to be? Seems like to me that after pulling the new wires down the tube and then welding the unit on the stator tube the heat of welding would melt all the wires inside. Is there some resource available that details how to replace the control head?

The stator tube should have a slit. The back of the trafficator has a short tube with a ridge stamped into it which slides into the slit in the stator. The short tube on the back of the trafficator is screwed to the back of the trafficator, so you can actually change from the adjustable style and standard steering wheel stub tubes.

There is no welding envolved. Can you post a pic?

Here are the pics. I took a grinder and gently ground off the weld.

There should be a slot in the Stater tube that the head extension will engage in. If there is no slot the PO may have made their own tube without putting a slot in it. New tubes are available.
