Horizontal Shaft engine on a wood splitter

I have an old log splitter that my great uncle built years ago. It has a home built frame mounted on a golf cart rear axle with some very heavy duty hydraulic components to do the pushing. It was originally powered by the golf cart engine but that engine has not been serviceable for many years. When grandpa used it, he would power it off the front pto on his Economy tractor: worked well but took a lot of fiddling to line up the tractor so the belt was aligned and it was tight. I'm looking for a new or used engine to mount on the frame and wondered if any of you guys had any good ideas. As new splitters start at $1500, I would like to mount an engine on this beast for much less cost. Any thoughts?

Find an OLD wisconson or kohler or onan motor. The older the better. mid 60s would be perfect. Garage sales are your friend. Just make sure its all cast iron. Then make it fit. If you want new, HF has cheap motors but they are made on the other side of the earth.

Any old 5-9 hp should do. HF has Subaru/Robins pretty cheap. Might check CL as pressure washers always kill the pump before the engine. maybe a lawnmower shop too. Scrap place may have something CHEAP you can use. I know I scapped good motors for lack of space (and it absolutely killed me to do so....)

Thanks! I'll have to look there. My idea about using the 3100 V6 from Grandma's car got shot down pretty quick. Something along the lines of "you've already wrecked the car, you don't need to destroy it further". Me thinks my uncle has no sense of humor.

I have one off of a grain auger that we converted to electric, about 10 hp with electric start and generator I'd sell you, but shipping to Pa from Oklahoma would be overwhelming! Be cheaper to get one local that you could pick up. Of course, if you want to drive to Ok! :encouragement: PJ
