Question for you guys. Does any of you know if I can change the color of a fiberglass shower insert or where I may be able to find out? I'm in the process of repainting my bathroom and it has a gold shower insert. It looks terrible. I'm looking at $750-1000 for a new one and just don't have the extra $$$ to spare. Any suggestions? Thanx!:D
 
I guess you could take it out and have it re gel coated but Id be it would cost as much as a new one
 
Can you repaint a fiberglass car? I know you can repaint the dash, console etc....Talk to a specialty paint store. THe local paint that supplies auto paints also had specail paints for plastics. We scrubbed, scuffed, prined and painted a plastic dash and console ($60) in our sons Supra that has held up beautifully...it hasn't been prone to scratching and has held up. They may know what type of paint to use at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
It can't hurt to try and if it doesn't work...well replacement was the orginal option anyway.
There are also people who repaint bathrooms (tubs and tile) you might call one of those too.

I would try the tub guys, but they are expensive to do a tub, but they maybe cheaper for fiberglass.

I am about to do a similar job in one of my baths. What you need to use is a marine paint called Awl-Grip which comes in a variety of colors! It is a two-part paint (pigment and catalyst) is fairly expensive (much less than tub replacement though) and a bit tricky to apply, requiring a bare minimum of two/three coats to get the right build-up of paint. Done right you will get a smooth, porcilain-like finish that is very durable (I is even impervious to laquer thinner when cured!!). Be warned though that it DOES require GOOD ventilation and is VERY strong smelling and toxic for about a day (It takes 8 hours of drying time between coats!)for each coat applied!
 
There are contractors who specialize in refinishing tubs and showers with a sort of epoxy paint.

The stuff can be applied over fiberglass, porcelain, tile, just about anything and comes in different colors.

A quick Googling showed lots of hits, including this one.

There are epoxy refinishing kits available. You have to be real careful when you put it on, but they work. If the current gold color is ugly enough, it will be an improvement!
