Holes in a 1275 block - question??

So I'm cleaning the 1275 block getting ready for a rebuild and I notice two internal 'holes' in the block.

First one is under the main bearing, not affecting anything but seems that there's a rough break in the metal.

Two: in the front of the engine block where the timing chain/etc will go?

Are these from the factory - normal stuff? I didn't notice them before I sent them to the machine shop, but didn't really look either. Doesn't seem like something that happened in the machine shop or in transport.

Ideas?

Bruce, the hole above the center main is normal for most 1275 blocks. There were some made without the hole, and they are much sought after by us racer types. It won't hurt anything to take a small grinder and smooth out the casting around the hole, blending everything to a nice gentle radius, This will help alleviate any stress cracks from developing. I wouldn't worry about it at all for a strictly street engine. Different story if you're planning on running 8000 RPM and 14:1 compression. Although, they've been known to stand that, too.
As to the hole in the front, you may be talking about the oil feed to the timing cover. Hard to say without more specifics. I'll look at a block this afternoon and see if I can figure out which hole you're referring to.

It would be nice if I used the stuff I saved. Here's a picture I have when I disassembled the engine and sure enough...the hole is there...So all is good. Thanks.

It just a splash hole to let oil into the timing chain area.
