Interesting. Cold water has a way of preserving things. Like the P-38 found encapsulated in a bed of ice and other aircraft found in the cold waters around Iceland.

The story of the Franklin expedition is fascinating - Franklin's body has never been found. They refused to dress like the natives- and suffered for it - they abandoned ship with everything they could carry, literally. The ships plumbing, piano, stove, all their shoes and tried to move it all through the arctic. There is evidence of cannibalism, and, while searchers couldn't find things for years, the Inuit knew where things were pretty much the whole time. It just took the searchers asking. One of the side stories is the power of Inuit oral tradition.

Wow - I'd love to see a movie of that horrific story. Franklin's wife kept the name in the public's ear for years, hoping to finance more searches.

A fictional account of the Franklin expedition:

Really enjoyed that book. And what the crew of the *real* Franklin expedition went through - true horror.
