Hirsch Paint--Not Cheap!

I was going to order a spray can of Hirsch 2000 degree manifold paint for the TF. A little over 17 bucks isn't all that bad for a special paint, BUT, they send it through FED X and their charge for this tiny can of paint is over 13 bucks! So, the little can of paint will cost in excess of 30 bucks! OK, I can afford it, but I refuse to adhere to those delivery fees. I'll order the paint from a local business. Might not be able to get a 2000 degree paint, but I'll be happier keeping my business local. If enough people refuse to pay these shipping prices, the rates would come down. A loss of business is a good incentive to cut prices. PJ

Agreed. I try to go to my local hardware store when possible.

Regarding shipping, I often order stuff from Amazon. They have a "non-rush" shipping (7 to 10 days) that's ususally free.
You can buy almost anything from Amazon these days....lawn mowers, paint, clothing, etc.

Nial, I just found out that Advance Auto has a VHT paint that's rated at 2000 degrees. $8.49. Most manifold paints I've seen are around the 1200/1400 degree range, this is a little unusual, but great if it works. I'm going to pick up a can today. PJ

I wonder if a big part of the shipping was due to it being "hazardous".. or didn't it get classified that way?

Have any of you tried the POR Black Velvet heat resistant paint?

I have used PORs manifold paint before. The natural steel color. Seemed to hold up well. I like POR products.

Bought a can of this from Advance Auto. Haven't tried it yet, engines not ready. This stuff comes in a couple other colors also. I bought the aluminum for the TF manifold. The original ad I read said it was 2000 degree paint, on the can it says 1300 / 2000 degrees. I'm assuming that means 2000 degrees for brief bursts of heat and 1300 continuously. Ah, for 9 bucks, it's worth a try. PJ

Paint a bolt and send it to me and I'll tel you EXACTLY what temp it'll go to. I used VHT "high heat" paint on my muffler and it didn't hold up.

Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with Hirsch. Bill Hirsch is a good guy, and very dedicated to the hobby. You should call them and see what the story was with the shipping fees.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Mr. Hirsch, who sells some top shelf items, it's Fed-X, UPS and other shipping company's that hiked up the prices when fuel went to over 4 bucks a gallon, only thing is, they never brought the fees back down when fuel got cheaper and probably never will. JMHO. PJ

I hear you. The only direction shipping costs seem to move in is UP! Our firm used to ship a lot of documents back and forth to local clients, and over the last two years, the costs skyrocketed. So much so that our clients invested in better scanning technology, and now send everything by email. I'm sure they've covered the costs of the scanning equipment five-fold this year alone.
