High Beams

Well, I hit a deer the with my truck the other day so I'm "stuck" with Emmie Girl as my daily driver for a week or so until the truck is fixed. Oh the punishment!

Today coming to work, I dimmed my lights for an oncoming car. When I put my high beams back up, no lights. Only the low beams work. I've never messed with the steering column switches before. Is it as simple as dirty contacts or when the switch quits working, it just has to be replaced?

I hope it isn't anything to do with the previous owners "custom" made RED wiring harness under the dash!

Could be as simple as a loose connection.

Check the connections behind the grill before you get into the column. Trace backwards from the lights, as the connections are easier to trace that way.

Use a VOM at the front Lucar connector (B/W wires) and work to the switch to find where the voltage is "leaking" out.

Likely the switch, tho. The contacts can be cleaned but it requires a disassembly of the cowl and removal of the switch. #600 Wet-or-Dry, or better a ScotchBrite green scrubbing pad will clean the contacts well. CRC 2-26 spray lube is a good thing to use for lube/loosening dried out lubricant, BTW.

Consider a Roo guard for your pickup and continuity tester and wiring diagram for your LBC. If you ever end up in the middle of nowhere with the light failing and headlights that suddenly don't want to come on you will be glad you have the tester and wiring diagram.(learned the hard way!)
Agree with Bill, check form the headlights back and hope you get lucky.

Kurt.

Thanks for the input. Hopefully it's something simple. I'll feel better when I can get home and get into it. When all I can do is sit here and think about it, I always think the worst. ( Why do we have to work all day?) I will be throwing a tester in my tool bag, for sure!

and, if it is the switch (was for me) you need to unbolt the steering column at the dash which allows you to drop it just enough to get the clamshell plastic cover off, then, it is relatively easy to dismantle and clean the contacts. BTW glad it's just the truck needs fixing not you - and of course with Emmie Girl drive underneath!
