Today's date over 80 years ago, a British team flew *over* Mt Everest in a Westland PV-3. They had a whopping 100 foot clearance as they neared the 29,000 ft summit.

McIntyre and Douglas-Hamilton preparing for the flight. Unpressurized aircraft, lambs wool in the flying suits, cans of oxygen and rubber hoses.

For another early attempt to reach the summit, check out the story of Mallory and Irvine, 1924, in Gillman's "The Wildest Dream", 2000.

Mallory *may* have reached the summit, but never returned. His body wasn't found until 1999. Irvine has never been found.

Hats off, gentlemen. and Rest in Peace.
