I have a '79MGB, it has a Webber Carb w/electric choke.
I have it in my garage and use a clear felx hose to vent fumes to the outside.

In just a couple of days of starting it and runing it for a couple of minutes, the clear hose has turned black with what looks like carbon. It is not oilie and I do not see any signs that it is buring oil. The tail pipe is black with carbon too. Is it running to rich or is there some other problem I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Pat Walker

Running rich, Pat.

And: WELCOME!

What Weber is it? Is the choke pulling fully off? If so, you might have to re jet it with smaller jets. A lot of guys on this forum have Weber's and I'm sure some will chime in to give you some good advice. Also, welcome to the forum! PJ

No question here, too rich for one reason or another. Choke not comming fully off would be my first check.

The way gas prices are going, I'd be lookin' for a manual choke kit. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If the choke's "electric" it ain't no DCOE fer sure, Paul. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Another thought is: Has the car been run long enough to achieve "normal" operating temp since you've had it "held captive" in the garage? That choke will take quite a while to shut off.

Pat, an FYI: I'm notorious for disliking ANYTHING "automatic" on an LBC... or most other cars too.
Just so's ya know. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Welcome to the BCF.

...& if it is running rich, there's not a lot you can do with it unless you're into rejetting...think dual HIF-4's!! JMHO

Pat,
Welcome!

Before you rejet, retune, or whatever, check that the gas in the tank is FRESH. The current stock of gas doe not have much of a tank-life. What we see as running rich because of black smoke is often just unburned shtuff from older fuel. A month can be too old. Happened to me, and many, many other folks. Ask the small engine shops! Really, how old is the gas.

Good point Peter. Well could be the case.

Thanks for all the replys.

The gas is fresh, the tank was low when I got it last week, took 11+ gal. The rest could have been old. It hadn't been driven since Dec. (started but not driven).

Choke seems to be working fine, closes when the engine is cold and opens fully when it warms up.

Hmmm. Then it appears to be rejetting time. I've no trustworthy tables for the 2BBL DG(E)V series. P'raps there'll be someone come across this thread soon with recommended numbers.

Stewart?!?

REjetting time....& I'll preface this statement by the following: I HATE WEBERS!!

That said, did it ever run correctly? If so, it has the correct jets so they might just need replacing.

If it never ran correctly, you're gonna have to figure out which jets you need. That can be expensive buying a couple of each & fiddling with all the combinations until you stumble on what's right.

Like I said, "think dual HIF-4's"

Hi Tony,
According to the P/O, it ran fine:, but I noticed the soot on the floor and in the clear pipe the second day I had it. The car runs smooth and strong on the road. It does not idle well and will stall out at a light if I don't keep it reved up a bit. I don't know much about carbs and even less about Webber's and two barrel carbs. When I was checking to make sure the choke was opening all the way I did notice that the barrel on the right (I think is must be the secondary)had a 1/8" of gas sitting in it, when the engine was off. Like I said I don't know much about 2 barrel carbs, but that didn't seem right. Is it? Is the float stuck, and is that the brass thing I can see down the throat of the barrel? ( I know these terms, but I not sure what I am talking about.)

Thanks
Pat

It's a 2 stage carb so I'm not surprised that one barrel looks open while the other looks closed.

Have you checked all the rubber hoses that go to the thing, find something not connected or cracked leaking vacuum?

Yes raw gas sitting in there sounds wrong to me too.

I'd pull the top off that carb and check the float....may be sticking. be sure the needle and seat are decent.
Clean out the float bowl while you're at it.
You may want to let the fuel pump run and push a little fuel through the bowl with the carb top off, to help make sure everthing is clean.

And just another thought: these engines don't need more than about 3 lbs of fuel pressure. Sometimes, folks will put in an oversize, aftermarket fuel pump that can push 8 or 9 lbs. In which case the float needle would unseat and cause rich running.

Thanks you all for the advise and suggestions. The car runs so well otherwise I'd hate to mess somthing up, so I think I will take it to a MG shop near Atlanta that seems to have a good rep.

I'll get my feet wet when I get to know the car a little better.

Thanks again.

Pat
