Hey Patton - pitted chrome answer

Patton,

Not sure you asked here or on the Healey list about the oval surround piece that goes around the instrument panel. I believe they were originally chromed. This is based on my originals being slightly pitted and crazed like old chrome plating can get. They do have replacements in stainless steet but I ended up having mine rechromed. You also wanted to know about protecting chrome. I think the best thing to use is wax which provides a barrier to the elements. Don't use anything abrasive on new chrome because you just adding scratches to the surface (most chrome cleaners are abrasive). If it is pitted or flakey it's probably not very high quality chrome or has been exposed to the elements for a long time. Hope that helps.

Cheers,
John

Thanks John,

My car is suffering from a case of good intentions. The PO bought all new chrome for the car. All indications are that the new chrome is junk!

On an aside, since I am pretty active here and on the team net list, I usually try not to ask the same question in both places as I know most here read both. If I have pictures, I always post here unless its really big (to me) stuff like getting the car back.

I get the Healey list on digest form so it's a bit harder to respond to people in a timely manner. Sorry to hear about your chrome problems. I haven't been happy with most of the chrome on the repo parts so decided to pay extra (in some cases) to have it done correctly by a quality shop.

Cheers,
John
