Yes they do it up nice and it is interesting to know exactly how the car left Coventry (or wherever).
Nice people too, they had a hard time reading the microfilm for my TR4 so it took 2 tries to get it right... as I understand it they are (in the case of early TRs at least) working with a very old microfilm of an index card that rode down the line with the car and was subject to greasy fingerprints, tea stains, etc.
I'm just glad that someone cared enough to preserve this history, goodness knows the fellows building these cars probably didn't dream that 50 years later people would care about such details.

I'm just wondering why they put it on microfilm to begin with. Cars of today don't have this done. Is it done on computer nowdays?
Webb, as George mentioned, it was originally on an index card that went down the line with the vehicle. It was transferred to either micro film or micro fiche for permanent record keeping.
Todays cars have computerized records, but there is still a paper copy of the "Build Sheet" that accompanies it down the line. And, you'll find a list of the options the car is equipped with somewhere on the vehicle. Inside the glovebox, for instance.
