Here's a real Daimler for Basil!

Hello Alan,

an interesting car, and yes Daimler rather than Rolls Royce was the car of choice of our Monarchy.

I'm confused that it mentions Mercedes Benz and also vintage, I don't understand the association?

Alec

Wow, what a POS! Lavished with tens of thousands of dollars in restoration? I especially like the Ford 6 jammed under the hood and backed by a firewall hacked out of plywood. It is sad to see a car like that ruined.

Have a nice day

No association, the Daimler Chrysler co is the owner of MB, but they is no association other than the name

Opps! just took at the Daimler car company site and according to their history, apparently the founder of Daimler was a friend of Daimler, bought his engines from him and named the company after the same Daimler who later on got involved with Benz

Interesting.

He states he lives in Honolulu. I have never seen this vehicle here. I've lived here for 18 years. Tuffy Medeiros has a wonderful, original(except for upgraded wiring and cooling fan) 52 Riley that he is finally going to sell, WHICH is the vehicle you always see in the front of the parades, carrying the head politican, or beauty queen.

Strange that I've never even heard of this car here.

and a MB hood ornament???? ummm... I don't think so.

and 'nary a spot of rust'... except for this one in the upper left side of the picture:

this guy is smoking crack asking 88k for this bodge.

Okay, looked closely at the background in the pictures. It does look like he is in Honolulu. I still find it strange that I've never heard about, or seen this vehicle before.

"1949 Mercedes-Benz DB18 Coupe
Vintage 1949 Daimler DB18 Parade Convertable DB-18 JAG"

And the seller certainly seems confused about the manufacturer...MB? Jag? Daimler? Ok which is it...
What a dreadful shame to see such a fine car subjected to such careless treatment and for such $$$!!

Could it be Daimler-Benz, or is that much later...? The only thing I can think of is that there may have been an association early on. Just a guess.

You want a Riley, Call Tuffy Medeiros at 808-222-9527.

He is computer illiterate, so nada on the web. His car has been featured in several of the magazines over the years.

Darn fine condition. Mechanically perfect, new suspension front and rear, new gears and bearings in the gearbox and differential. We (BCCH) just went through the engine a few months back. A gorgeous car.

I think DB18 is just a model number.

I pinged the seller and told him he's barmy for expecting minimum 50k for the car. To my suprise he pinged back and asked me what I think the car is worth.

I told him that at best, the car is worth no more than the sum total of the body and chassis parts because he doesn't have the running gear, which is quite rare.

I suggested he's be lucky to get 10 to 20K. I suspect you couldn't sell it for over 10k.

Pity about that motor swap.
It may actually be a better engine, but it kills the value of the car.

Anyway, regarding the Daimler name with Jaguar vs Daimler-Benz:

From the VandenPlas Webpage:

Contrary to popular belief, the Daimler Automobile Company is NOT part of Mercedes Benz. The confusion arises due to the fact that in 1896, when the Daimler Company of the U.K. was formed, it was an agent for Gottlieb Daimler's 1 horsepower motorboat engines. When the company purchased the UK patent rights, it retained the Daimler name. The marque has always been British. In the early years, Daimler automobiles were known for their association with the British Royal Family. Until 1950, the primary transportation of the Kings and Queens (and their sons and daughters) were Daimler autombiles.
In 1960, the Jaguar company purchased Daimler for the prestige the marque has developed among heads of state worldwide, captains of industry, and yes, even rock stars. Their new production facilities were a big bonus to Jaguar who was then selling all the cars they could produce.

Hello all,

the Daimler - Jaguar association had a couple of slants, one the MK 2 was fitted with Daimler's 2.5 litre V8 engine which was considered to be a very good unit designed by someone who's name I have forgotten (I'm sure someone will remind me)
Daimler also made a 4 or 4.5 litre version of this engine and it was used in the Daimler Majestic Major limousine. The story is that William Lyons, killed it off because it was faster than his MK 10 sedan.
