Post-War Other Herald Wiring Harness Removal

Gents,
I am in the process of removing the wiring harness from my 63 Herald and came across a puzzle. The harness to the rear of the car runs from under the dash, across the driver side floor and through a hole in bottom of the B pillar, up through the B pillar, and then under the fender to the rear. The question I have is how does one extract the harness through the very small (approx 3/4 inch diameter)holes in the B pillar without having to cut and then splice the wires?

PS: For those who believe the height of insanity is owning a Herald, while I do not necessarily disagree, I did purchase a TR6 recently just for the joy of actually driving a Triumph that not only runs, but runs fast. A far quicker trip to the insane asylum perhaps! :smile:
 
I think we need pictures of both - not just the TR6.

Not sure of the spacial relationship of everything, but maybe put a twist tie around the harness and a thin stick or fuel line tub and see if you can pull it out like that? Would that be too fat for the opening?
 
Geez,I should know the answer to this...but I haven't done it in many, many years now. I'll try to take a look at one of my Heralds and see what I can scope out. Meanwhile, I think "tdskip" is probably on the right track. Somehow the factory got them through that hole once, so there's no real reason why they can't return whence they came! :wink:

Is it a matter of several wires with bullet connectors on the ends? (Like I said, it's been quite awhile....) If so, maybe you can stagger them and then temporarily wrap the end tightly with some tape?
 
Thanks for the suggestion re: the wiring harness. Not sure it will work, for the harness is already wrapped as it goes through the holes in the B pillar and the terminations involve the two and three bullet female connectors which are too large to fit together through the hole. Ah ha, they would go individually! That means that if I unwrap the harness and run the wires individually through the holes it may be the solution. Thanks!

The harness is wrapped as it goes through the holes in the B pillar and the terminations involve the two and three bullet female connectors which are too large to fit together through the hole. If I unwrap it, the individual wires would go through. Then it would be a question of how to rewrap that portion of the wires that would eventually run through the B pillar. I look forward to your follow up. Thanks.

I took a quick look at one of my disassembled Heralds this morning, and I think I was on the right track initially. Don't unwrap anything; rather, remove the connectors try as best you can to stagger the bullet wire ends a bit and temporarily wrap them together if necessary, then pull backwards through that hole towards the trunk. (At least on the 948 sedan I looked at, there are various junctions and splits in the subharness that make it look much easier to "feed the front part forward" through that hole and towards the front of the car.

Hope that makes sense. (I must confess that the car I looked at already seems to have had the wires cut and respliced by a previous owner. If I get a chance to look at a more intact example, I'll let you know if I decide to change the story above. :wink: )

If you are saying that there are female connectors in there, then I would imagine that you should be disconnecting the wires from them before trying to extract that part of the harness. I haven't removed a harness from a Herald, but they should always be easy enough to extract and replace.
I don't think that you are any further down the road to insanity than anyone else on here. I have two and a half Heralds, a front-wheel-drive 1300 saloon and a TR3 and I think that is quite normal! :yesnod:

According to the restoration book, you just have to take off the female connectors and the harness will come out. I have a used harness here which was shipped to me from the UK, and they did not have to cut it, or unwrap it to get it out of the car so it is possible.
