HELP! The keyboard on my Sony Vaio laptop, less than 2 years old, has decided to go crazy. I think maybe there is a stuck key, but not sure. The symptoms, type a key and get multiple entries, or sometimes nothing at all. Can laptop keyboards be repaired/replaced? I am limping along with a full size desktop keyboard (usb).
 
The keyboard on most laptops is designed for removal. You may have to search online for instructions. Between my heavy handed typing, dog fur and a 2 year old I wind up replacing them quite frequently.

If it's specific keys giving you issues pop them off and check for crud or sticky stuff underneath. If it's the entire keyboard try wiping it down with a baby wipe first and then blowing it out with your air compressor.

There's a number of sites online that sell new parts. My latest keyboard (was for a gateway) cost in the range of $100. These stupid things aren't designed for longevity though. You can always pick up a new one fairly cheaply. We just got a new laptop off tiger direct for ~350 and it's pretty nice. It's the first laptop I've seen in years that actually has a full numeric keypad.

I have a vaio - and had the same issue, course mine was discovering that laptops and baba ganoush don't mix :blush:

I was able to clean the keys some with alcohol and cotton swabs, prying off the keys tended to break the clips even though they are supposed to be removable.

I finally had the keyboard replaced - wasn't cheap, but it's a work computer so that was the route I needed to go. For that reason I didn't do it myself. I do recall that the tech found Vaio keyboards more expensive than normal, more on the order of $150. FWIW you can buy them on ebay too if you have the numbers and the knowledge.

Spilled some Thai in the one at work yesterday. I beat it against the desk till all the rice fell out if it and it's be great since. It almost replied to a thread here by mistake while doing so.
 
Thanks for the replies. I found a source for a new keyboard for $80. Easy to remove and replace.
However, I am p i s s e d off that it failed so soon, very disappointed. :wall:``

Part of the problem is that we all seem to want lighter, smaller, thinner laptops, and the weight, size etc has to come out somewhere.
