help, where is my oil going

Hi
I recently put a 73 MGB GT on the road. It has been with a mechanic for 3 years. He was supposed to be driving it himself for the last month. Leaving Maryland heading to Arizona with the car there were minor issues.
But in Tennessee the car is now going through oil, about 1 quart per 35-50 miles. There is no oil leak visable, no smoke, only soot in the exshaust. Calling the mechanic; he said to put in Barrs leak engine restorer.
This makes me concerned I do not want to blow the engine.
I could stop try to find a reputable mechanic to repair it.
Please help I need input from someone who knows MG motors.
This is the original motor with a little over 100,000 miles

OK, had this happen once in a different car.
Stop and
1 check the oil level.
2 check the radiator.
I had a headgasket break and the oil seeped into the radiator
through the water jackets.
3 Check the tailpipe again. With the car running, bad rings could allow
blowby, put a gloved hand over the exhaust while running and see if it
comes out oily.
Good luck

car has been sitting for a few hours, I stopped to sleep
Oil level is good
radiator is good
Held a paper towel about 2 inches from the tail pipe & revved the motor to 2000 rpm
I got black soot spots on the paper towel
not oil, not wet
Thank you so much for your advise
I just don't know the correct answer at this point
drive or not to drive.

Silly as it sounds,
Is your dipstick completely bottomed out when you are driving?

If you can't notice anyleaks, and it is not spewing oil all over the motor
Go another35-50 miles and check the oil level again.

I am out working on cars right now, and looked all over my cars here, even
have a engine on a stand, just trying to figure this one out for you.

Drove her about 50 miles
car is running hot
I am going to flush the radiator
I had put in the Barrs leak engine restorer
I am no longer loosing oil at least for now
Thank you very very much

IF you can get to a name brand automotive chain store,

see if they have Red Line Water wetter on the shelf.

It will cool the car down 10 to 20 degrees. I run that in all my

Custom Hot Rods and regular vehicles.

It is a 16oz bottle, the stuff is kind of a red in color.

oh yes
Thanks a lot
I haven't had a car that needed that for a long time
forgot all about it including the name
you are correct though I should be using it anyway
Thank you again for all your help!!!!

How's the venting on your engine? From what I've read, seen here, etc. if there isn't adequate venting, internal pressure can build up pushing oil out the most available spot, which could be anywhere. And you wouldn't get drips in the driveway or garage - once the pressure is gone, the oil stops coming out. ANd at speed, the fan blast most likely blows the leak spot clean....

My 2 cents, something to think about.....and I may very well be TOTALLY wrong.
