Help! Strange Noise

My 92 Vanden Plas has been making an unusual noise that seems to be coming from the middle of the back rest of the back seat.

This is a low-mileage car, with only 65K original miles.

Sounds like a low pitch swarm of bees. The noise is present when the engine is running and the car is at idle, like when stopped at a light. It will make this noise in any gear, including parking and neutral. There is no difference in pitch or frequency when I rev up the engine. At cruising speed the noise remains unchanged, except it is less noticeable due to overall ambient noise while moving.

I thought it might be the fuel pump, so I removed the gas cap and put my ear to the fuel filler tube, but it doesn't seem to be coming from the tank.

The noise can also be heard when I open the trunk. The trunk is empty, and the spare is well tightened in place. So I'm ruling out vibration as the cause.

Is the fuel pump inside the tank on these vehicles? Could it be the fuel pump? I can't think what else is behind the rear seat that could be the cause.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

John.

Hi John,
Welcome to the forum! Very happy to have another Jagophile here! As to your noise, there are soooo many possibilities, but if it does it at idle I'd think that would rule out anything like the differential. One thing you migt try is go to your local autozone or PePboys and get a mechanics stethoscope....You might then be able to zero in on where the noice is coming from. Is it louder from inside the trunk or from inside the car?

yes, my guess as well would be the fuel pump.
same noise i had on my series three, which has a trunk mounted fuel pump. it gave out soon thereafter. buzz, buzz, buzz.
