Help removing speedo/tach

Removing dash to replace crash pads. Removed knurled
nuts holding back of tach. Things loosened up. Wood
dash dropping loose; but, face of speedo and tach seem
firmly affixed to front of wood dash.

Reluctant to get too physical. Beginning to see progress
and salivating to get this thing all the way out.

HELP, PLEASE! I can't stand the wait.

I think that they may be just stuck, but have you removed the cables from the rear yet?

Actually, I have not removed the cables. Everything
dropped loose. Guess I got slightly excited.

Thanks, Paul. You're like a God to me. Suppose you'll
say pull the cables, then talk to you, right?

Talk to us. No Gods here, just those who have made the same mistakes as you, and lived to tell the story.....

Next two tips, label every wire as you take it off and get your digital camera out and start shooting pics now.

Gottcha. Already into camera mode. Did read the manual
that said to remove cables. Seemed I could push it
through with the cables still on.

Heading to the garage to take it to the next level.
Thanks, Paul.

You can push it through with the cables on the gauges, only if you disconnect at the distributor and transmission. Not a real good idea.

This is more important than your technical abilities.
I used those small 1" x 1" white paper tags with strings
attached. They cost like maybe $4.00 for a bag of a
hundred at Office Max.

Yeah, it helps greatly to unscrew the cables from
the tach and the speedo--- from the gauge side only.

Go buy a box of single edge razor blades. They are
just the ticket when working with the gauges. You
can wiggle the edges in places and get things unstuck
with patience.

Go to Dan Master's web site and download the wiring
diagram for your specific year car. It is a handy
reference in case any tags fall off.

Thanks. Got the tach out -- it was stuck. Found a
few wires not in their place. Do have the Masters book --
actaully been preparing for weeks.
Little brackets under knurled screws on speedo are
missing; thus likely the darned ground was off, pretty
sure. Easy fix, but I must see if one of the vendors
has these little buggers.

Moving on and leaving bread crumbs.

Thanks again so much for all the support.

Maybe that explains why you had trouble getting them out- the brackets are the only thing that should be holding the gauge in. Maybe someone put something sticky round the outside edge of the gauge to substitute??!

Also, there should be black finish screws through the dash at each end, holding the wood down.

Yeah, I think somebody put sticky stuff behind the
gauges -- basically glued them little suckers in.

Got them out with minimal amount of extra effort.
Everything is looking pretty good so far. Took a picture
of the carnage that resulted from pulling the dash.
Looks a little messy.

Ya Hoooooo. I'm closer.

Thanks for all the help.
