I haven't pestered ya'll in a while!

I need to know if this is worth bidding on (once I can get a shipping quote from the UK to the states) and what I should max my bid out at. 3 synchro od trannys are hard as heck to find and we want one for the Binabox -- which will be here on Thursday!

"buyer to arrange pickup or shipping The gearbox is located 30 minutes south of Glasgow" ((Know where can I get a shipping quote? I know the tranny I bought from John weighs about 72 pounds))

Well, Janel:

1. Without its unique shifter, its a good boat anchor - & those shifters are like hen's teeth to find unless you want to pay big bucks for a new one (if available)

2. Shipping from the UK via boat will be about 2 months & the same amount as you're gonna pay for the transmssion....

...you can do the math....

I travel to the UK from time to time & have never even thought about bringing one back with me on the plane due to cost....& I sometimes have things shipped air freight directly to Huntsville - but never a tranny!

Thanks Tony. I should have known it was too good to be true.

JB, here's someone you should try.....he is bound to have one of those and it's a darn sight cheaper shipping from Wisconsin than the UK, plus if it's not as stated he will put it right. He's a good guy, knows MGs inside and out. I've done business with him a few times.

MG Limited
Greenfield, WI

E-mail me off list for his contact info if interested.

I didn't realize they used a special shifter. I thought the OD shift levers were the same throughout the years!

My GT has a '73 OD transmission in it but uses a MK I non-OD "crooked" lever. So perhaps the same early non-od lever would fit an early OD transmission? After all, the front half of the transmission is identical between OD and NON-OD, right?

Doug Lunig? Tony gave me his name to contact regarding new front shocks! I forgot to call him today!
~makes note to self~

I'll ask about the 3 sync od and the shocks.

((I like the crooked shifters!))

3 more days til the Binabox is home!

I have his phone # Steve, thanks though!!

The buyer to arrange pick-up or shipping seems the killer... the cheap methods for shipment have the sender box/crate it and drop it at the depot. A freight forwarding company would do it, but it would cost you.

If you wanted to tae it further you could use the local "yellow pages": www.yell.co.uk and search for freight forwarders in Glasgow, or even try the town where its located....

3 synchro ODs had a straight gear shift lever, and if you look at one installed in a car, it also has the shift boot installed the other way around. The 3 synchro ODs also have a very rare solenoid that mounts on the firewall. They are very very hard to find, and are not available new.

I thought the 3 synchro OD trannys had the crooked shifter?

No, they were straight. But I do know it's possible to put crooked levers on, I just don't know how involved it is. Like I said, my '73 OD transmission has a crooked lever and I'm sure I've seen a photo of an early 3-sync OD unit with the crooked lever as well. Worst case, you could cut the levers and mate the crooked top to the straight bottom, then hide it below the rubber boot.

3 speed OD shifter will only fit the 3-speed OD tranny - & the other shifters don't interchange.

And since there's no shifter, this tranny probably isn't something I want to bid on...

~sniff~

darn, Janel...you're getting harder than Keenan to convince of something...hehehehehe

plus, the little wiring harness & solenoid that mount on the firewall aren't included, are they? Beinabox doesn't have it, neither did my '63 - I bought an entire car just to get that part!

Yep Tony, Steve's right. You can put a crooked lever in a 3 synchro OD box. I don't know how, but I know someone who did it.

You can also put a crooked lever in a 4 synchro non OD box, because I had a parts car like that once.

I know how to do the 4-speed OD conversion...I can't for the life of me see how to do the 3-speed OD unless you change the entire shift mechanism & they're completely dfferent!
How about getting with him to see how he did it.

I would love to, but unfortunately he passed away. His name was Bob Mason and he was a technical advisor to NAMGBR until his passing early this year, shortly after I purchased this car from him. I suppose the bright side is that I do have the car here, but I'm far too terrified to rip it apart to see how it was done.

Well, after you posted, I went out to my garage...I got my '63's regular shifter & put it in the early 3-syncro OD...it fits, capture screws go right in to hold it in place & the tranny runs through its pattern...I think the problem's gonna come when the tranny is in the car...it looks like it'll be a bear to tighten the 2 capture screws. & that might be the problem.....but, shifters are still available from Moss for $75...the wiring harness isn't.
