HELP! Hub / inner axle seal - metal lip?

Hi all,

Looking for a confirmation... There's a picture of my driver-side hub, below. I have pulled out the bearing, the O-ring... and scraped out a rubber axle seal from between the hub itself, and a metal lip. Sorry for the quality of the pic, but you can see it, attached (it would seem) by some red... Loctite?

The axle seal that came in my kit is all rubber. Am I right in thinking I need to drive out the metal shell? Is this a fairly common mod? It's National Bearing 472164, if anyone is interested...

Thanks in advance!

That's the outer shell of the old oil seal, and has to come out. A small, sharp, chisel can be used to punch the edges in toward the center, until you can get a good grip on it with vise grips. Then you should be able to peel it out. If that's really red LocTite, you may have to heat it a bit with a propane torch. Not much, just enough to soften the LocTite.
Whoever installed it using LocTite should be flogged!

So, no replacement necessary? The new rubber seal stands on its own, so to speak?

Follow-up question... the new seal goes in with the 'open' side (i.e. with the spring ring visible) facing out?

Thanks again,
Duncan

Duncan, installed, the spring should be visible looking down into the hub as shown on your picture.
Just get that old piece out, and press in the new seal.
Jeff

That probably isnt Loctite on the o.d. of the seal. Its a coating called Bore-tite which is a latex based sealer.

Just pull out the remains and clean the bore using laquer thinner or MEK and drive the new seal in with a round block of wood or big socket and a light hammer.

Hi JEFF !!!!!!

also...to add to your work.........use a new o-ring in the hub grrove and use a lirttle grease to keep it attached. The paper gasket ..use it also. permatex Aviation form-a-Gasket. should be .012 thick...NO MORE.

Thanks Jeff, Jerry and Jeff again! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Good news, it popped out OK... new rubber seals pressed in, bearings packed and installed, paper gaskets and O-rings in place.

I'm off to the hardware store, so I'll grab some gasket conditioner / Permatex.

Phew, can't wait to drive this thing again...
