Help... ! Coolant temperature sensor leaking..

Hi: I was cleaning around the engine of my 66 AH and now the coolant sensor just below the thermostat is leaking. Was able to remove to inspect and looks OK! but, how is it supposed to seal?. There was no o-ring or gasket between the nut and the sensor tip. If you have seen one you will know what I am talking about (its a bit difficult to explain).

I don't know much about Healeys, but I'm guessing it's like the mechanical gauge bulb on the earlier TRs : the bulb has a tapered section that mates with a tapered seat in the tstat housing. That is where the seal is supposed to happen. The nut doesn't need to seal, since coolant isn't supposed to get out that far.

If it leaks, most likely the seat in the housing is corroded. Some JB Weld might fix it, but use some sort of parting compound on the sensor so you can get it out next time.
 
The seat won't change, el. The seat's on the bulb, a tapered flange the nut pushes the bulb against, as Randall says.

Twisting the bulb will result in a work hardened capillary tube and allow the gas to escape. No more temp sensor then. A teflon paste would be a good solution, tho.

We've used both RTV and Hylomar with some success. Depends on how badly the seat in the head is pitted.
 
Thanks Doc, It has been many years since I worked as a wrench at the import garage. You've jogged my memory! We used to use this stuff called Curil for this sort of thing.
