HELP! Alternator replacement

Ok, heres the deal...

I bought a remanufactured alternator to install in the MG and when I took it in to have them use an impact driver to take the pulley and fan off I turned in the core and went on my merry way.

Fast forward to today when I went to install the alt... When I placed the fan on the new alternator, I noticed it slides over the "key" and past it then freely rotates on the shaft. So I tested putting the pulley on, and tightening the nut on the end, which at this point caused the fan center hub to rub agaist the housing of the alternator.

Is this how it is supposed to be installed, and I remember it turning a lot more freely, or am I missing a spacer of some sort that possibly broke/fell off?

Hey! I'm a little horrified that you posted this thread a while back and you've had no response. I just oredered a new alternator to replace the one on my '79 B and it doesn't look like a big deal to replace (I went through three on my Fiero) but I'm wondering how your situation turned out. A mechanic friend of mine recommended keeping the old alternator before turning it in and getting the refund...just to make sure all is the same as before.
Did you get yours situated correctly and is all well??

Hello Toups,
if it is a Lucas alternator, yes, there is a spacer between the fan pulley and the drive end bearing. Basically, a simple plain bush.
