Hello all.

I feel a little silly making this post, but Basil asked for an intro so here it is.

I'm 44 years old and work as a computer sys admin. Just last weekend I picked up two MG 1500s, a 1976 and a 1978. I've been an amateur mechanic all my life and have brought a few motorcycles back from the grave but have never attempted something of this magnitude.

I wish I had read the thread about using the U-Haul trailers, I could have saved myself a lot of worry and stress. lol! In the end,I used the U-Haul car hauler trailer and it worked fine, despite my worry that the car would fall through the center. Tight fit but each car was very secure for the hour drive home on the expressway. I used a lot of gas though since the trailer weighed 2100 lbs unloaded and I had to make two trips for the two cars. If anyone has to do this and is worried about the weight though, I can tell you that my F-150 with the small V6 engine pulled it just fine.

So now I have two, non-running Midgets in my driveway. Both have been parked a few years and require much work. my plan for this year is to do(start) a major rebuild with body work on the worse(1978) car and try to get the better(1976) car running for local playin this summer.

I'm sure there's a faq or at least many posts on getting a long sitting car back on the road and I haven't even received my first service manuals yet(though they have been shipped). Believe me, I'll get to them soon enough cause I tend to be a little obsessive when I get a new toy. If anyone wants to add anything or point me to a web site though, it would certainly be appreciated. Heck, two weeks ago, I didn't even know I liked British cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hello Hawkwind, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
Welcome to the forum and congrats on discovering your love for the LBCs. As far as a good website, I think you've found it. You'll find that if you post questions here, you will get answers. I've got three different manuals for my Midget and I have still received answers here that were not to be found in the manuals. There are a LOT of very knowledgeable people here ready to help and encourage in any way possible so be bold, ask questions and hopefully you'll be in one of those cars soon! Good luck!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Thank you for the welcome.

The reason I bought two is that the guy was moving and had way too many projects around. He had planned to use the 1978 as a parts car but since both are relatively complete and parts are available, I see no reason to junk the car. It was kinda a two for one deal. He had a 1970 Spitfire for sale too, but that one was really bad, broken axle to start, and I think I have enough to keep me busy. Besides, I wasn't sure how to move it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'll probably be mostly lurking, as Basil calls it, for a bit, reading and learning. Thanks in advance for all the great tips I'm sure I'll find here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Welcome aboard Guv'na. Sounds like your in for some fun. I would reccomend doing all you want to,to the 76 before you put to much into the 78. You may wind up finding it's much more valuable for parts, especially if you're an old scavenger like me. I guess it all depends on how bad the 78 really is. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

congrats.

Keep it simple and rebuild the carb, flush the fluids
& fuel and drop a new battery in the good one and see what she does /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yep, I'm gonna see what's up with the 76 before I make any decisions on the 78. The final plan is kinda free flow right now as the first step is to get em runnin, no matter what else I do.

As soon as I get my repair manuals and catalogs, I'll probably look for a rebuild kit for the carb. In addition to the excellent suggestions, I'm gonna pull all 4 wheels and do some checking. Up here in Michigan, we get some major corrosion problems and I wanna make sure the wheels will roll, stop and turn without falling off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif It's still February here too and that means cold. Other than pulling the carbs for a rebuild, I'm not planning on playing too much til the temps get above 40 or so.

Hey hawkwind,

Welcome and where in the Detroit area are you? I'm in Waterford just west of Pontiac and drive to Dearborn every day for work. Bugeye58 is just down the road a bit too!

And one more welcome, hawkwind! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I second aeronca's statement: 1500's are great fun! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Thank you for all the welcomes and web sites to bookmark.

I live in Allen Park, for those who asked. Nice to know a few of you are so close.

I'm looking forward to cruising Hines Drive, like we used to in my friends '66' Midget, back in the 70s. And I'll be out at the Woodward and Downriver cruises, if I get one of them running. I've also heard of the "Battle of the Brits" out at Freedom Hill and will probably be there too.

But, before any of that can happen, I have to rebuild this carb sitting behind me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Welcome. You'll find this a great resource.

I assume you have the dual carb setup. I rebuilt mine and the only thing I would recommend is to do one using the "other" as a map while you complete it. Was a little time consuming, but all in all -- not a terrible job. Be carful and take lots of pictures. I had some difficulty in the linkages.
